Six weeks ago we made the transition from cot to toddler bed with our 30 month old Daughter. When i say “We” i really mean me.
I went through the sleepless nights, being woken three to four times a night and putting our little girl back to bed. Olivia is old enough to reason with and i wanted to avoid putting up a stair gate on her door and closing her in. I really did not want to go down the controlled crying route either. Therefore i was exhausting myself. The household was losing sleep and grumpy.
When i received a copy of The Happy Sleeper through the post i was delighted at the fact there may be some help to understand my child’s sleep habits and to get my happy household back.
It was a comfort to know i could pick up the book at 4am in the morning whilst i laid awake because i had been up to walk Olivia back to her bedroom yet again! Once she figured she could climb out of her cot bed there was just no stopping her.
As a result of studying this book i have changed several habits to enable our Daughter a abetter sleep association.
I felt guilty for taking away her secure cot and leaving her in a bedroom with a new bed. Olivia is my first and only child so to me she is still a baby! I would sit by her bed until she fell asleep each evening, most nights falling asleep myself.
As you can guess this caused all kinds of problems and insecurities. I was shattered.
So i put more time aside for our bed time routine and changed Olivias bedroom into a small haven where she would feel safe and secure. We made a reading area and introduced a dim night light. Now Olivia is always put to bed awake and is able to fall asleep by herself.
We also introduced a star chart.
Olivia is at Pre school now and participates in various activities through out the week. Her schedule was exhausting her so we cut back her social life and introduced a lunch time nap back into her routine. She is so much happier now she is getting all the sleep she needs.
I could of spent hours sourcing information and different opinions from the internet but nothing beats a good paper back book to study from! The happy sleeper has most certainly been my bible for the last six weeks.
And i am so relieved to have my happy, content little darling back!
