For one of the first times in history we are about to see the number of our senior generation surpass that of the youth, with those 65 and up making up 15.6% of the global population by 2050!
Advances in healthcare and standards of living have improved quality and length of life for older generations, but it has us asking, ‘Why does society often cast off its seniors as ‘incapable’ or ‘unable’ to learn new skills?’
Times are changing and it’s time for us to change too, breaking the stigma and encouraging each other to take action and get inspired to learn new skills or tricks of the trade.
I have sourced the above information from Bathing Solutions
If there was one thing my Mother installed in me that was to respect and appreciate my Elders. Today i want to spread awareness of the breaking barriers campaign and discuss why we tend to look upon the elderly as being so vulnerable and incompetent to carry out every day tasks or learn new skills.
In this day and age life begins a lot later than your twenties and there are still many people in their sixties and beyond enjoying life independently and facing new challenges to keep their mind and bodies active. My own Mum for instance enrolled herself in a distant learning course when she was in her late Fifties because she wanted to further her understanding of computers. My Father in Law has hit the big Seven zero already and still loves to travel, is active and healthy and able to do activities and play with his Grand Daughter. We have taught him how to use a mobile phone and he even has email on his computer!
Olivia’s other Grand Mother turns Seventy this year and is very independent. She teaches in her spare time at a performing stage school and is very creative. The photography course would be perfect for her to learn a new skill and meet new friends.
The breaking barriers campaign is about sharing and learning new courses in the community for over 65’s. If you take a look at the website (See here) Bathing Solutions you can check out some of the courses on offer. I think the selection is fantastic and know many people that would love to take up the opportunity of learning a new skill. Photography, fitness, horticulture and floristry are just some of the courses on offer. Please do spread the word to somebody you may think will be interested. This is a great opportunity to socialise too.
