A few of the key elements that i have tried to install into my child since she was young is sharing and helping others. This year is our first year of joining in with our churches charity to send a Christmas box to a child less fortunate than ourselves. We wanted to send a box of gifts that would be useful to a child receiving our box rather than just a bunch of toys. So after having a think we collected some great items ready to be packaged up and sent away.
Here are our top Five suggestions of gifts to pack
Christmas present. One main toy such as a dolly, inflatable ball or skipping rope.
Toiletries. Liquids cannot be posted for obvious reasons and so we are sending a flannel along with a bar of soap. One toothbrush and children’s toothpaste. The box we have packed is for a girl between 2-4 years of age and so we have included some vests and a brand new pack of underwear in the box.
A bag. We have enclosed a small bag for our chosen child to pop her new bits into and keep safe. She can also use her bag for when she starts school.
educational materials. I thought learning cards were a great gift to pack along with a small coloring book and a set of pens.
Pictures of our family. We are sending a picture and a card with a written message from our family. This adds a really nice personal touch.
Other things we could include from our home that we no longer need or have never used are childrens magazines, small books and pocket tissues. I am sure we will find room for a small sweet treat too such as a candy cain. And i am going to let Olivia choose a decoration from our christmas box to send to her new friend.
I was particularly negative about this whole operation when i first heard about it from our local church and school. I thought about the money aspect of filling boxes with gifts and shipping them to their desired destination. I thought about donating the budget i had for this project to a chosen charity instead but then i had a change of mind because i wanted my Daughter to be involved in bringing another child some happiness this Christmas.
When we collected items together for the box and discussed why we were sending these presents, the experience from my end alone made it all seem worth while. Donating to charity is something we do often but having materials to give is a whole new experience for our Three year old. She really enjoyed talking about sharing and deciding on the gifts that would make another child happy. Unfortunately we could not fit a Ben and Holly castle into the box but she managed to find some smaller items!
If you want to join in with Operation Christmas child then do check your local church to see if they are hosting for the charity.
Remember to give back this Christmas.
