Helsinki is the capital of Finland
Helsinki was a quick stop for us as we departed from the Queen Victoria Cunard cruise ship. We took a coach straight to the center and as we drove past street markets and other non tourist destinations I was reminded that I could not wander freely or self explore due to being with toddler that day and on a strict time limit with the ships itinerary.
Taking the time to sit and write this post has actually jogged my tired memory and reminded me how much I enjoyed our short time in Helsinki visually. It was fun to see old trams and learn about the history of the harbor. I remember stopping at a street bar and ordering a glass of champagne in the sunshine whilst enjoying watching the world go by with my hubby as the baby napped. Little moments like that really put their mark on excursions.
We experienced a world food market whilst we were there which happens only once a year after the flower festival. So lovely to see the flower displays still hanging from the street lamps and petals sprawled across the pavements. I have never in my life seen so many different varieties of food! We ate so well that day. Jumping from stall to stall sampling nibbles of delicious delights both savory and sweet. We had to pay of course but the food was cheap and the portions were small leaving just enough room for a further culinary delight.
After a varied lunch we dumped the crowds and found the Christmas shop. I adore Christmas and would visit Helsinki all over again just to take another trip here. Again if only we could have stayed longer. Definitely not a place for a toddler , I snatched some minutes alone and left my family to browse the store whilst I took a trip down into the magical basement. Set up all year round solely for Christmas is an array of Christmas decs and baubles. In every color, shape and size that you can imagine. At the time I was still learning how to use my new Olympus pen camera and I wished I had of taken more pictures, even if they were slightly out of focus from my quivering excitement or a little under lit. For now at least I have those visual memories.
Until next time Helsinki.
